When we chose teaching as a profession, we know we didn’t do it for the money. While teacher pay has risen in the past years, it still never seems enough to quite make ends meet. If you’re very careful, you can live fairly comfortably. However, it’d be nice to have a little monetary cushion or money to travel once in a while. The best way to do that is to start a side hustle!
In this post, I’m going to share 10 side hustles that are perfect for teachers to get you those few extra bucks!
Side Hustles for When You Need Money Now
1. Tutor
As a teacher, you’re already equipped with the knowledge to tutor students. I currently tutor students in reading. In fact, I just went through the process to become an Orton-Gillingham practitioner. Read more about my journey in this post, Orton-Gillingham: My Experience as a Trainee. You can choose to tutor in whatever subjects and age ranges you feel comfortable with.
To get started tutoring you can create a flyer and hang it in local places, with permission of course. Another great way is to post it on your neighborhood Facebook page or a local group page. Some schools offer after school tutoring that you could apply for, too, if you don’t want to search for clients.
2. Babysit or Petsit
Babysitting or petsitting for neighbors is a great flexible opportunity to earn a little extra cash! I have done both and like that it is not a set schedule. I can choose to accept or not accept the job based on my availablity and needs.
Again, advertise that you’re available and your rates on your neighborhood Facebook page. Also look for posts for people searching for care for their children or pets, and respond to them.
3. Sell Items on Vinted
I’ve been doing this for a few months now and I have had luck in making some money! It’s great that this platform doesn’t have selling fees, so you get to keep everything you make. 4. Part-time Job
Another option is to apply for a part-time position either for an in-person or remote job. Remote jobs are more difficult to come by these days though, because everyone seems to be looking for one. Choose a place that offers a discount that you’d actually use and/or a place that offers the flexibility you need. A couple ideas are grocery stores, retail stores, or coaching.
Side Hustles for When You Don’t Need the Money Right Away
1. Product Report Card Surveys
There are many survey options out there, but this is the one I’ve made the most from. You don’t get cash, but you do get Amazon gift cards for completing surveys. Surveys range from a few minutes all the way up to an hour to complete.
I usually do them when I am stuck waiting, whether picking my child up from a practice or waiting for an appointment. While waiting, why not make a little money.
2. Summer Job
If you have summer availability, get a summer job! There are several places that hire for the summer season such as summer camps, pools, parks, and ice cream parlors. Begin looking for these positions in early spring to apply!
3. Start an Etsy Shop

4. Freelance Write
This one takes a little time to see the fruits of your labor. But if you love to write, this one is a viable option. Look for magazines that are accepting submissions. Then, write short stories or articles and submit them to the magazine following their specific guidelines. If accepted for publication, you will earn a commision for your work. I have had a couple short stories accepted before! It’s very exciting!
5. Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is when you become an affiliate of a company/brand. There are companies that when you join you can apply to be an affiliate to other popular companies/brands. These are places like Commision Junction or Shopify. You can also sign up to be an Amazon affiliate, which is what I am. Keep in mind that you usually have to make minimum sales during a certain time period to stay active and/or stay in the programs.
6. Start a Blog
One of the best ways to share affiliate links is by writing a blog! When you write posts, you can add your affiliate links into the posts to drive sales. Be sure to disclose that you are an affiliate that will be receiving a commision on each purchase. This is the law!
