I am a total believer in the use of essential oils to promote wellness. I use them personally, my husband uses them, my kids use them, and I have used them in the classroom. I only use the best essential oils which, in my opinion, are oils from Young Living.

I was introduced to these oils by a fellow teacher when I taught in Michigan and have been using them ever since. I choose to use Young Living because of their Seed to Seal promise. Their essential oils are of the purest quality. In fact, many of the oils are ingestible (the ones with the white labels marked vitality). Obviously, my students did not ingest them.

Essential oils can, also, be used topically and in a diffuser. In my classroom, they were used in a diffuser. Essential oils were used in my classroom for a variety of reasons. Different essential oils have different functions and I used them at different times to promote calmness, to aid in focusing, or just to get rid of that funky smell. Here are some of the essential oils I have used in my classroom diffuser:

Citrus Fresh-This oil has a nice clean scent and is popular with students. According to the Essential Oils Pocket Reference book this oil, “…amplifies creativity and well-being, eradicates anxiety, and works well as an air purifier” (Life Science Publishing, 2014).

Purification-This oil does what it says in its title, purifies. This oil is great for eliminating smells. Many of us work in old buildings with varying smells and this oil doesn’t just mask the smell, it eradicates it. It can, also, be used in those classrooms of older students that come with their own smells, particularly after gym class. Wink, wink.

Geneyus-This is from the KidScents blends collection and according to the Young Living website is, “…great [to be used] while children work on schoolwork and projects.” In fact, I have a roller ball of this ready for my son to use before homework time to help him focus.

Peppermint-Peppermint, alone, can aid in focus, too. This oil is, “purifying and stimulating to the conscious mind” (Life Science Publishing, 2014). Students seem to really like this one, too. I think because it is a familiar smell to most.

Peppermint, Lemon, and Lavendar-This combo is known to ease allergy symptoms and smells amazing! I have used this blend during allergy season, both fall and spring.

Lavendar-This is a calming oil. It can be used alone or combined with another scent, such as Cedarwood to create a calm atmosphere. Use after recess, holidays, or any time your students are a bit riled up.

This is just a handful of essential oils that Young Living has to offer that can be used in the classroom. I selected these essential oils in particular to write about because of my positive experiences with them, along with that these oils are lower in price than others. However, these oils do last a long time and are well worth the investment.

Before using essential oils in the classroom be sure to check your district and school’s policies regarding fragrances in the classroom. Some places have strict fragrance-free policies. Always follow those first. And it is highly recommended that you get parent permission before diffusing in the classroom and know the allergies of your students. Not all classrooms are the right place to diffuse essential oils.

But even if you are not able to diffuse in the classroom, you can reap the benefits of their use. You can use them yourself! I use essential oils on a regular basis to benefit my overall health, which reduces absenteeism. More time for teaching and less time preparing sub plans.

There is an essential oil blend I make in a roller ball bottle that my family uses that is called “Winter Wellness.” I can not take credit for creating this blend, but it uses oils to support our body’s immunity. Another fantastic oil for use in a rollerball bottle is Dragon Time. It will help soothe symptoms leading up to your time of the month and during. Those are just a couple of my favorite uses for essential oils, but there are many more essential oils that I use for differing purposes!

A note of precaution: Be sure to read the labels before use, as to whether you need a carrier oil or not when using topically.
