It’s the last week of school here in the lowcountry! Summer, here we come! In the summer is the best time to do some reading. Reading is one of my favorite pastimes as well as one of my favorite ways to relax over the summer. So with that, I bring you: Summer Reading: Teacher’s Edition Part 3!
Summer Reading: All Fun!
1. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros- I blame my daughter for this one! She got me to read it and I am now hooked. With the newest one in the series having come out recently, Onyx Storm, it’s a great time to pick this one up! It’s, also, pretty easy to get at the library, too.
This book is a young adult fantasy about Violet Sorrengail, a fiery 20-year-old, entering a war college. Also, did I mention dragons? Because there are dragons, too, along with some steamy encounters. This is one book that will help you leave the stress of the school year behind!
2. All Good People Here by Ashley Flowers- If you enjoy mysteries with some twists along the way, this one is for you! In this story you follow Margot Davies whose childhood best friend was murdered years ago. Margot has since moved away and become a journalist, but has never forgotten her friend whose killer was never found. Now, Margot finds herself back in her hometown to help her ailing uncle when another young girl is murdered one town away. She can’t help but wonder if this murder is connected to the one from so long ago. Follow Margot as she digs into the details of both murders to uncover the truth once and for all!
3. Where the Rivers Merge by Mary Alice Monroe- This book just came out and I haven’t had the chance to read it yet, but can’t wait! Mary Alice Monroe’s books are usually the perfect summer read and I’m sure this one will be no different. It is about Eliza and her home called Mayfield and the lengths she goes to for her family and her home.
4. The Witching Hour by Anne Rice- If you’re looking for a book to last the whole summer, this one is it! It is close to 1,000 pages! This book moves through time following the Mayfair family, but is mainly about the newest witch, Rowan, who hasn’t yet discovered she is one! If you’re a fan of the tv series, this is the book that got it started. Get all the missing details the show leaves out, along with the little changes made along the way.
5. Beg, Borrow, or Steal by Sarah Adams- Most teachers I know like reading books about teachers, including me. This one came out this year and is quite humorous! It follows the story of Emily Walker, a 2nd grade teacher, on summer break and what happens when her ex-coworker Jack Bennett returns to town. If you’re a fan of enemies-to-lovers books, you will LOVE this one!
Summer Reading: Professional/Nonfiction
1. Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown- Brene Brown shares 10 guideposts for wholehearted living to help you embrace your imperfections in a new profound way. She does this through relatable stories and simple steps you can follow today to feel fulfilled with the life you are living now! Complete the inventory before you read the book at https://brenebrown.com/wholeheartedinventory/ to see the areas where you can grow the most.
2. Self-Compassion by Kristen Neff- Take the self-compassion test now at https://self-compassion.org/self-compassion-test/ to see how you rate on how much compassion you have for yourself. Then, read the book and follow the guidance of Kristen Neff to increase your feelings of self-compassion to lead a happier life!
3. Operator Syndrome by Chris Frueh, PHD- If there is a veteran in your life that you care about who deals with PTSD on a daily basis, you’ll want to read at least part of this book. In it, the author dives deep into explaining how PTSD affects veterans and the people whose lives they touch. Frueh, also, gives hope by sharing ways in which to cope with PTSD to live a more “normal” life.
4. The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt- As teachers, we all know the importance of play in childrens’ lives. This book shows how play has declined in children over the years as the digital age arrived and how that has affected our children. Haidt goes on to share steps we can take to change the trajectory and “end the epidemic of mental illness.”
5. The ADHD Advantage: Why Your Brain Being Wired Differently is Your Superpower by Dr. Anders Hansen- I’m sure you all have students with ADHD. In this book you may be surprised to discover that many of the traits of a person with ADHD are not negative traits (as we usually perceive them in the classroom), but traits that can be tapped into to help a person be successful in their career and in life! A great book for gaining an understanding of your students with ADHD and how you may be able to help unlock their potential.
