With February around the corner, finally (Am I right?), it’s time to start thinking about Valentine’s Day. I remember how much I loved celebrating Valentine’s Day in elementary school. Decorating a valentine mailbox, choosing the perfect valentine for each friend, having a class party with heart-shaped cookies, and more. My teachers over the years always made it a special day.
That special day wouldn’t be complete without a Valentine’s Day book being read aloud for all to enjoy. Here are 8 books my students have LOVED over the years!
1. Love, Ruby Valentine by Laurie Friedman-This book is at the top of my list for a reason! I love how it promotes kindness and friendship not only on Valentine’s Day, but throughout the whole year. I, also, like how the illustrator inlcudes a countdown to Valentine’s Day on each page.
2. Love Monster by Rachel Bright-This one is a cute story with a theme of loving someone the way they are.
3. The Biggest Valentine Ever by Steven Kroll-This is one of the books in a series of books with two mousey friends named Clayton and Desmond. My students enjoy hearing stories with characters they already know and love. I, also, like that these books can be used to introduce character traits-using Clayton and Desmond for examples.
4. The Day it Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond-This is a sweet story about Cornelia Augusta and what she does one day when hearts fall from the sky. There are many crafts that could be created after reading this one! Click here to see a couple.
5. Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day is Cool by Kimberly and James Dean-This is a great one for all the Pete the Cat fans out there! I’m definitely one of them! This book can be read before having your class make a valentine for someone special in their life.
6. Be My Valentine by M.J. Carr-This book is about a mouse named Isadore who wants a girl mouse, Athena, to be his valentine. He wants to impress her with the perfect poem, but things don’t work out quite like he hoped. This book is about courage and friendship.
7. Valentine’s Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg-This is part of the “Jitters” series. In this story Mrs. Hartwell wants to plan the best Valentine’s Day party ever for her students. When the big day comes, her plans go awry and Ms. Hartwell feels like she has failed her students. Her students come to the rescue and the party isn’t ruined after all!
8. Mr. Goat’s Valentine by Eve Bunting-Mr. Goat is collecting gifts for his “first love.” The book keeps you guessing at who it might be. In the end, you find out who the special someone is.
Please let me know in the comments below which Valentine’s Day books your students liked best! If you and your students enjoyed these books, check out my other lists of books for the December Holidays, Thanksgiving, and Halloween. Happy Valentine’s Day!
